Unlike heraldry, which was developed to identify the individual wearer, the function of livery was to identify the wearer as part of a community, centred around the giver of the livery. Although it reached the peak of its popularity in the fifteenth century, the practice is far older.
Dressed to Impress
Many historians, as well as contemporary commentators, trace the first use of the badge in a military context to Edward III's 1327 Scottish campaign. However, there are some earlier
