The only near-contemporary account of Benedict's life and works is a sketch by Pope Gregory I (r. 590–604) – incorporated in the second book of his Dialogues – detailing Benedict's character as a holy man, his achievements as a pioneer of monastic life and the miracles of divine intervention associated with him.
