Well-travelled fynbos

The world loves South Africa’s unique fynbos. In October 2023 alone, more than 1 000 tons – that’s 1 million kilograms – of these endemic flowers were exported to other countries.

“It’s the most fynbos that South Africa has ever exported in one month,” says Karien Bezuidenhout, general manager of Cape Flora SA. “This figure includes proteas, pincushions, tolbos and various types of foliage, but not roses and other traditional cut flowers.”

Cape Flora’s flowers are exported as loose stems and bouquets that are inspected by the Perishable Produce Export Control Board (PPECB), which also counts the exact number of flowers that are exported – to the European Union, America, the Far East and Middle East.

“Approximately 1000 hectares have been planted by Cape Flora and we harvest sustainably on approximately 200000 hectares of veld in the Western Cape,” says Karien. “The industry plays an important role in
