It’s not every day of the week that you’re confronted by a human head turning a dark crimson red and threatening to explode. But there we were, myself and my ever-trusty wingman, Russ, buried deep in the midst of the sandy wastelands of the Murray-Sunset National Park, on an unseasonably warm Autumn day even for that part of the world.
After years of dancing through the famed orange sand pit out near Hattah in far-western Victoria on enduro bikes, I’d had the bright idea to suggest we go and tackle the place on a couple of adventure bikes. So we duly fronted, myself aboard a Suzuki V-Strom 650 fitted with chunky, knobby tyres — thankfully — while Russ presented aboard a trusty long-term Off Road Adventure Kawasaki KLR650 he had at the time.
We had a three-day, two-night loop planned, kicking off from the Hattah roadhouse south of Mildura and overnighting at Murrayville in the south, then Renmark on the banks of the Murray
