Classic American was lucky to be handed an old photo album by longtime reader Paul Coleman from Blackpool. Pictured here are some of the photographs in that album. Paul explained: “Most of the photos were taken near Blackpool’s Victoria hospital and Stanley Park, although there are two taken at St Annes (Lytham St Annes) on the sands. There’s a garage forecourt on Church Street and various streets in Blackpool identifiable, including Whitegate Drive – that’s the tree-lined street. There was a car club called American and Canadian situated in the town at the time. The pictures were taken by a man called John Picard and I acquired a lot of his collection before he died. Some of the cars belonged to local car dealers at the time.”
Well, here they are in all their glory. Sadly, John is no longer with us and only he knew the full story behind these cars and the photographs taken of them, so we can only speculate on them now… It’s probably worth remembering that when these photographs were taken in the early- to mid-Sixties, Blackpool was still in its economic heyday, as cheap international travel hadn’t taken off yet and holidaymakers flocked to the resort all year round, making it a prosperous – even glamorous – location. It would have been a
