ANTWERP TRAM NOCTURNE

Exceptionally, Vlatams (Antwerp's Tram Association) were given permission to run a vintage tram and trailer at night through the streetsmany times until finally retiring in 1974. In its last decades it was fitted with 66 hp motor, and track brakes, which were rarely used as the wooden coachwork frame was not really suited to track brakes! Trailer 1660 was built in 1925 and again had many changes until it was retired in 1973 when trailer working ended in Antwerp. Both cars have been restored by Vlatams members with the help of De Lijn engineers. Antwerp celebrated 150 years of trams in 2023, and for the full story of the extensive and interesting network, see our recent publication “Antwerp 150 years of Trams”.
