FORD CAPRI Mk1 (1969-1974)
Having done so much to popularise the ‘pony car’ formula with its Mustang, it was inevitable that Ford would try to create something similar on this side of the pond. Ford of Europe even wanted to use the nameplate ‘Colt’ in reference to its new car’s role as a junior version of the stateside colossus, but when Mitsubishi objected, it delved into its back catalogue and plumped for Capri instead. The moniker had originally been used on the short-lived Consul Classic-based coupe from 1961-1964, but the new Capri was an instant sales hit following its January 1969 unveiling, and soon had rival European manufacturers queuing up to produce four-seat coupes of their own.
