Giant cruise ship's climate impact
THE world’s largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, has set sail on its maiden voyage from Miami, USA, to the Caribbean Islands in the Caribbean Sea – but bigger isn’t always better, critics say.
Five times larger than the Titanic, the megaship is an enormous floating resort boasting an aqua-park with six waterslides, a surfing simulator, a climbing wall, an ice-skating rink, a minigolf course, a karaoke bar, a casino, an escape room and an obstacle course.
In terms of the environment, the vessel is said to be more eco-friendly than some smaller cruise ships as it is the first in Royal Caribbean’s fleet to use liquefied natural gas (LNG), which burns more cleanly than traditional marine fuel.
