Why is Rafah important in the Israel-Gaza conflict? Netanyahu 'sets date' for ground invasion

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has reportedly set a date for a ground offensive in Rafah despite international condemnation of the planned attack. 

Speaking this week about military plans, Mr Netanyahu refrained from identifying an exact date but warned it had been arranged. 

"This victory requires entry into Rafah and the elimination of the terrorist battalions there. It will happen – there is a date," he said on Monday. 

On Tuesday, he added: “No force in the world will stop us. Many forces are trying to do this but it will not help because this enemy, after what he has done, will not do it again.”
