Sheep in wolf’s clothing

’58 BEETLE

When I first saw the pictures of Ashley Smith’s low riding ’58 Bug, I immediately liked what I saw. I even guessed the colour – L434 Fjord Blue – as it’s one of my favourite classic VW hues. What I wasn’t expecting, however, was a 30-horse engine. I guess I’m so used to seeing cars like this with honking great stroker engines in these days, and I don’t mind admitting I always find myself slightly disappointed when I see a later, ’61 and on engine in a pre-’61 car – it’s just not right. There’s something about the look, and sound, of a solid pedestal motor in an early VW that’s hard to beat.
