Final Fantasy VIII

Given its predecessor’s huge success, FFVIII can often seem overlooked. Focussed on Squall as he meets a world-ending threat, some complex systems made this entry divisive. But for those who call it a favourite, it’s a passionate love.

Like a lava-dripping Bomb, FFVIII oozes ambition, unmissable in the way it blurs the abstracted. Another moment had you exploring space, and another worming through a festival; a whip-smart use of prerendered graphics.
