It was time for a change of country, so the next day we crossed the border across the very corner of Bosnia and Herzegovina into Montenegro, on our way northeast to Jabljak, Montenegro’s highest town at 1450 metres. We headed east to Niksic and then north through Donja Brezna to find the Pivski Manastir (Piva Monastry). This three-nave church was originally constructed in the 16th Century in the valley of the Piva river. When plans were drawn up to build a dam at nearby Pluzine in the 1960s, it was obvious that the church would fall victim to flooding and so people began dismantling it bit by bit and rebuilding it in its present peaceful, elevated location a little further south from Pluzine. The walls are covered in beautiful frescos with the paintings covering more than 10,700 square feet, and it is hard to believe that so little damage was caused by the relocation of the church.
