I’m lying in the warm cocoon of my comfortable bed. It’s totally dark inside my hotel room and through half closed eyes I can see through a narrow gap in the curtains that in the wider world outside, dawn has started to announce itself. After my late arrival the previous evening it’s a great temptation to roll over and drop back off to sleep, then suddenly a loud and unfamiliar noise snaps me fully awake. It’s the call of the Muezzin summoning the Islamic faithful to observe the ‘Fajr’, the first of the five ‘Namaz’ or daily prayers. His heavily accented voice resonates through speakers mounted around the beautifully ornate Minaret atop one of the mosques of Mohammedia. Good morning Morocco: time to get up and go fishing!
WHITE MARLIN MECCA
It’s no great secret that there is exceptional blue water sport fishing available off the coast of north west Africa in general, and Morocco in particular. Current IGFA line class records for white marlin in the men’s 2lb, 4lb and 6lb class, along with the women’s 6lb class, are all held with fish caught off Mohammedia. The records tally for white marlin caught fly fishing here is even more impressive, and includes the men’s 4lb, 6lb, 8lb, 12lb, 16lb and 20lb tippet.
