SHORE ANGLING
Q I’ve recently started match fishing and I’d like to introduce my oldest son, who is seven, to the world of match fishing. What would you say is a suitable age to start? Are there any organisations that could put me on the right path? I am a great learner but, regrettably, not a great teacher.
GEOFF WILSON, WEST SUSSEX
We asked Mark Slater, manager of the England under 21 shore fishing team for this year’s World Championships, for his advice: “In my opinion, as soon as a youngster can cast and retrieve safely, then match fishing is the way forwards to hone skills and learn from others around them. A lot of clubs encourage juniors and will have some pegs set out for parent and child, as well as providing prizes for juniors. The Angling Trust is heavily involved with the Talent Pathway programme which has been set-up to identify and encourage young talented anglers through the Junior, Youth and Mens shore angling teams.” Our advice is to find out which of your local clubs caters for juniors
