From the heart
Q After eating big meals, I suffer from uncomfortable heartburn. Is this something that I should be worried about?
Christine, Taunton
A Heartburn is caused by stomach acids passing back up into the oesophagus, which causes inflammation.
Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GERD) occurs because the valve at the lower end of the oesophagus becomes incompetent.
If you eat a big meal, it will stretch your stomach, putting more pressure on the already malfunctioning valve.
