Though the 38-year-old Vaughan Williams had only completed one of his nine – and with the likes of also yet to come – he had hardly been sitting idle up to that point. Studies with Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London had set in motion a career that, as well as composing, saw him collecting folk music, editing and launching the Leith Hill Musical Festival. After further studies with Ravel in France, the premieres of his and in 1910 gave notice of the glories to come.
