MULCHES GET GROWING

Every gardener knows that bumper harvests with an outstanding taste begin with the soil. It couldn't be simpler: good soil nourishes healthier plants, which in turn yield better pickings.

One of the things I love about gardening is that it can be as complicated or as straightforward as you want it to be. And when it comes to the stuffthat we grow our plants in, it really isn't rocket science! Pay attention to your soil and everything else will follow.

The very easiest way to build rich, dark soils that are full of life is through regular mulching with organic, or biodegradable materials – everything from nutrient-dense garden compost to seaweed.

But before we start laying down the good stuff, let's go back to basics for a moment and explore why this is one of the most effective gardening techniques we can deploy.

CREATE NEW BEDS USING MULCHES STEP BY STEP

STEP 1: Cut down existing lawn or weeds as close to the ground as possible.

Trimmings can be left to rot down where they fall. If possible, dig out perennial weeds, removing and discarding as much of their roots as you can.
