The Plane That Turned The Air War

VINTAGE PLANE COLLECTOR BRENDON Deere’s P-51D Mustang fighter, NZ2423, has a past as storied as its Spitfire hangar mate.

Although built by North American Aviation (NAA) and used by the Americans to escort US bombers in World War II, the P-51 was in fact of British origin. The British War Purchasing Commission in 1940 wanted more Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawks, but the manufacturer could not produce enough, so the British asked NAA if it could build them.
