Why light and diet are key to winter care

DURING the colder months, our aviary birds and those in outdoor birdrooms need extra care. Species which are very small in size and weight, and others that have extremely rapid metabolisms, suffer stress when they go without food for even a short time. This applies especially to lories, lorikeets and hanging parrots, notably in a flock aviary (and especially in zoos), if lories are not fed early in the morning and are without food overnight.

Birds with special feeding requirements, i.e., food that could freeze, should always be housed in aviaries with access to indoor quarters, with flaps or doors that permit the birds to be shut inside at night. Nectar-feeders would have to be fed at least four times daily if the
