Family meals helped us both heal

After losing a close friend at 15, Sophia Parvizi-Wayne’s eating disorder took hold. Supported by her family, recovery came, but started back at the dining table.

Sophia, now 26, says, “Nobody teaches you how to ‘do’ grief but in therapy, I realised my eating disorder had stemmed from wanting control.”

What began as sporty Sophia wanting to run better, became self-imposed, excessive restriction. “I went vegan, then eliminated sugar, white carbs and more. I was cold all the time and emotionally switched off. Things were hard.”
