As I suspect it has been for most people with any sort of affection for professional golf in Australia, the last few years have been less than heartening.

But, right now, at the end of a pre-Christmas month in which the game in this country has just seen four varied events of real stature and promise, I am encouraged. On one side we saw strong fields at the Aussie PGA and Open, then again at the Cathedral Invitational won by Adam Scott. And on the other, the growth of the Sandbelt Invitational continues to give huge incentive and valuable experience to our up-and-coming youngsters. In that sense
