Here comes the Cavalry

The breadth of Cavalry FC’s successes can be perfectly encapsulated in a four-day period during the middle of December. On the13th, the club had the monumental moment of being included in a CONCACAF Champions Cup draw for the first time, pitted against Orlando City. Mere days earlier, their former player Mohamed Farsi helped Columbus Crew overcome Los Angeles FC to lift the MLS Cup, doing so just three years after a two-week trial helped the full-back earn a contract at Cavalry.

With the Calgary-based club now in the same competition as Ballon d’Or holder Lionel Messi, head coach and general manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr. enthuses that it’s “fantasy stuff”. That isn’t just the case for Wheeldon, as the club has allowed fans to dream and offered players a platform to reach their aspirations.

It’s been an action-packed five years for Cavalry since the inception of the Canadian Premier League (CPL), with Wheeldon admitting that
