WHAT do people want from a night at the theatre? For many, judging by this month’s offerings, it is a big visual and aural experience. For me, it is recognisable human emotion. That is why the revival of Tom Stoppard’s Rock ’n’ Roll at Hampstead Theatre, which I saw before Christmas, still haunts my memory. Sir Tom is often thought of as a dauntingly cerebral dramatist; in fact, he has a rare ability to touch the heart.

This play, which spans the years from 1968 to 1990 and jumps between Prague and Cambridge, may initially
