With less vegetation around, British birds have fewer places to conceal themselves in winter and are therefore more visible. The plummeting night-time temperatures ensure they are endlessly active during daylight hours, spending the majority of their time foraging for food to help them lay down insulating fat reserves to stave off the cold.
