Macron’s big shake-up

In an attempt to revive his “flagging” second term in office, Emmanuel Macron, who was himself France’s youngest president when elected, has appointed Gabriel Attal, a 34-year-old close ally, as France’s youngest prime minister, replacing Elisabeth Borne, who was sacked, says Henry Samuel in The Telegraph. Attal, previously education robes in state schools to “uphold” French secularism. Macron hopes Attal will “assuage domestic divisions” with “more consensual messages on reaching full employment and improving health and education” – and improve his party’s chances in upcoming European elections.
