Q I have noticed some people put pinion supports in their reels. Do I need them for my multipliers? If so, why don’t the manufacturers put them in as standard?

Some multiplier reels are quite delicate internally and are not designed for heavy lifting. My own opinion is that pinion supports can help, though installing them may impact your warranty with the manufacturer. What tends to happen is that you encounter big fish or clumps of weed and the play in the shaft handle causes the mechanism to move side to side while retrieving. This in turn means the main gear cog (pinion) is not being contacted perfectly, which then begins to wear it out. The pinion support sleeves eliminate, or reduce, the play in the handle shaft.
