Many people may know Pro Tools more as a recording program and wrongly less as a powerful program for modern music production. However, Pro Tools has long offered many interesting features, instruments and effects for this purpose. This is even more true with the Sketch Window. Efficient shortcuts and the ability to work in detail with audio files and add effects directly to them have long set the program apart from others.
Pro Tools Sketch
You can now create a new document in Pro Tools either as a „Session“ or as a „Sketch“. In a Sketch, you can compose ideas as loops on the fly in a new user interface in the style of NI Maschine or Ableton Live, combine tracks into scenes, transfer files via drag & drop or synchronize Sketch playback to a session. This is also known as non-linear arranging. This mainly loop-oriented song creation technique may notwhen quickly recording instrumentalists or vocalists. The „Sketch Window“ in Pro Tools differs from comparable options in Ableton Live, Bitwig and Logic in that it is largely independent of the main arrangement in the Edit Window. The Sketch Window is almost like a second small DAW with its own plug-ins; Sketches can even be saved as independent documents in their own format. However, if a Pro Tools session is also open, a kind of pin appears in the Sketch Window so that you can link the Sketch to a session - also with regard to saving.
