Y ADOLESCENCE IN the 1970s coincided with TV’s coming of age. Along with the rest of America, I watched the medium grow up before my very eyes—in large part thanks to the genius of Norman Lear. His oh-so-human comedies brought the real world into our living rooms, whether we were ready or not.
