YAMAHA / BELGARDA 660
PART THE LAST
Reassembly was quite interesting as the SZR has no centrestand. Most of the build was completed on a bike lift by dropping the frame down onto the engine and then assembling the rest of the parts; wiring, swinging arm and rear wheel. Then I made a wooden gantry to hold the bike vertical while the forks and front wheel were installed.
I chose to fit a standard silencer to go with the standard jetting and obtained one from a Dutch breaker. Next I checked the electrics. With a relatively modern bike like this, the electrical assembly is very simple. Different size multi-connectors are used so it is difficult to get it wrong. Yet as the SZR dates from the early 1990s its electrics are still relatively straightforward and pre-date the complex electronics that followed. The only sealed electronics are the voltage regulator and the ignition unit.
Then came fresh oil into the engine; 2.2 litres to the full mark in the tank when cold, and I filled the cooling system with coolant.
Now I was ready to start the engine using my portable fuel tank. The motor started on choke, settled down to a nice tickover after a couple of minutes, and revved cleanly. With the standard silencer the bike actually sounded nice,
