When I got the Belgarda home I checked the fluids. The engine oil was clean and slightly above the correct level on the dipstick. It had been topped up when cold because the seller could not start the engine. When the engine stops, some of the engine oil drains from the tank to the engine sump. It's not enough to wet sump, because the oil tank lies under the sump of the engine. To check the engine oil level the engine needs to run for a few minutes so that the dry-sump engine has chance to pump a quantity of oil back into the oil tank to get the correct level. If the level is checked with a cold engine then the level appears low. That was slightly concerning for a new owner, until the manual revealed all.
After charging the battery, the motor started easily and ran OK. No smoke; it ticked over when warm and revved cleanly. Everything sounded very quiet (the water-cooled engine effect), well, apart from the exhaust which was ‘throaty’. A running bike! That's nearly a first for one of my projects. Usually they are nonrunning piles of bits.
