Legend has it that back in the mid to late 1950s Velocette boffins proposed a radical new direction for the company. Recognising that they had previous experience making two-stroke sports bikes, it was proposed that instead of constantly mucking about with pushrod singles and creating exotic racers with overhead camshafts, or radical side valve flat twins for policemen or even ohv flat twins, something simpler and more affordable was needed.
