Although not within Britain, the six counties of Northern Ireland – Antrim, Armagh, Derry/ Londonderry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone – have been a part of the UK since 1 January 1801. Historically within the province of Ulster in the country of Ireland, the counties were reconstituted into the self-governing territory of Northern Ireland following the island's Partition in 1921. Just a year later, in December 1922, Ireland's other 26 counties elected to leave the UK altogether, with Northern Ireland remaining.
