The history of New Year’s resolutions
IT’S THAT time of the year when people will start making New Year’s resolutions to reflect on their goals and aspirations for the year ahead. For example, you might decide you’re going to eat more vegetables in the new year or go for more walks outside.
The idea of New Year’s resolutions was developed about 4 000 years ago by the Babylonians of Mesopotamia but instead of celebrating New Year on 1 January, they marked it in March when they planted new crops.
The Babylonians celebrated New Year with a 12-day festival called Akitu. They also made resolutions related to faith, mythology and power, believing that if they did what they promised, their gods would be kind to them.
