Don’t lose faith in your old riding gear yet. Many manufacturers provide instructions on their websites, offering valuable guidance on longterm kit care and recommended intervals for re-waterproofing. These serve as an excellent starting point.

In essence, most waterproof clothing has two key elements – a breathable membrane and a ‘durable water repellent’ (DWR) coating. To maintain the effectiveness of the former, it’s crucial to keep the garment free from grime, oils, and contaminants. The latter will need refreshing periodically with a re-waterproofing treatment, which needs to be applied to a clean surface.
