My friend’s gymnast daughter had been asked for a ‘weekly weigh-in’ by her coach. This started a group of us sharing a cascade of discussions and memories – some funny, some brought on tears, but they all included weird evaluations of our bodies from a young age. When I started this artwork, the girl actually had a measuring tape around her waist. Then I realised I didn’t need to shout in my work; people would see the message if it was subtle.
