Contrary to their common name, woodlice are not lice. Lice are parasitic insects, and woodlice are neither parasitic, nor insects. Woodlice are everywhere except Antarctica and these little creatures are true pioneers.

Woodlice are actually crustaceans, and the only fully terrestrial crustacean found in the UK. As their closest living relatives are creatures like lobsters, crabs and barnacles, they are something of a ‘shrimp out of water’ on land.
