INSPIRATION PRACTICAL
When you look at the work of some of the most successful artists they often have a distinctive style that sets them apart. Thinking of contemporary artists, such as Janette Kerr and Sarah Spackman, their style is often defined by their subject matter. For example, Spackman always paints still life, often fruits and v ases of flowers on a surface and her focus is on depicting the subtle shift in the colour values of objects juxtaposed with often neutral backgrounds to create very alluring paintings. Janette Kerr's work is always informed by her travels to remote parts of the world and her responses in paint are her experiences of the power and energy of the sea using a restricted palette of blues, greys, whites and blacks.
Recently I visited the Guggenheim Bilbao, where there was a retrospective of Japanese artist and writer Yayoi Kusama. The show was an in-depth survey of Kusama's work from her first drawings
