It is extremely unlikely that Rails to Turnberry and Heads of by David McConnell and Stuart Rankin (Oakwood Press, 2010) will either be surpassed or updated by any future railway historians. However, recent research has uncovered the following short aspect of the history of ‘The Turnberry Road’, as it was affectionately known to the railwaymen who worked its length. Readers with a sharp eye for detail will note that this event began, more or less, at the start of the working life of the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company. Although it is not a ‘pure’ railway item, as such, the War Memorial still exists to this day and can easily be visited and photographed.
