London | TRAVEL
It feels very incongruous walking along London streets, then turning into a green oasis of a campsite – but that's how it was at Abbey Wood. Who knew this existed so close to central London? Well, plenty of folks actually as the site was virtually full!
And what a site. There were very large, well-spaced pitches, friendly and welcoming wardens, and a slice of London habitat with parakeets, owls at night and urban foxes on the prowl for odd shoes. It was very amusing to see the pile of odd shoes in reception rescued by or from the foxes!
But I am getting ahead of myself… after just over an hour's drive from Essex, we arrived unsure as to what to find, but couldn't have been more relaxed and welcome at the site. After setting up in pouring rain, we managed a transport recce and a top-up of the Oyster cards.
It's a 10-minute walk (max) to arrive at the sparkly new Elizabeth line and Southeastern train station – so everything is laid out and waiting to be discovered.
There's also a host of buses within a few minutes’ walk of the site, too.
