Album: Heavenly Cream (Quarto Valley Records)

A few years ago, on one of his many visits to the Guitarist offices, the late Bernie Marsden let it slip that he was involved in a very special project recording Cream songs with a host of guest stars at Abbey Road Studios. Furthermore, Ginger Baker was going to be playing drums on the album. Everything went quiet and sadly a few of the people involved passed away, including Ginger, Cream lyricist Pete Brown and, of course, Bernie himself. But now the album is available, paying tribute to the influence of one of the world’s first supergroups and the trail of influence they left in their wake. We catch up with Malcolm Bruce, son of Jack Bruce, to hear more about the recording.

How did the Heavenly Cream project start?

“Well, it was really Pete Brown. Pete passed away a few months ago, but this was back in, I guess, 2017. He was talking to. So I guess that’s where the germ of the idea came from: Pete talking to Mike about cutting a deal for his documentary. They said, ‘Well, why don’t we make a record as well?’ So really Pete was the person that started the whole process. Then he asked me to get involved.”

“Several features make this example unique. Firstly, there’s the colour, because I’ve never seen a sunburst one before. It’s like a two-tone tobacco sunburst; I’ve had a Les Paul SG that was the same colour. It had to be custom-ordered and that’s why
