IN A QUIET VALLEY, JUST NORTH OF Bellingen, hidden among the gum trees, there’s an 87-acre property that belongs to artist Alexandra Mann. It’s an idyllic spot. Green paddocks roll away towards the distant hills. The forests are full of screeching galahs and chirping lorikeets. Penny lizards sun themselves on the porch. Far below, at the foot of the valley, a creek called Little Promised Land meanders towards the Never Never, which empties into Bellinger River and eventually runs all the way to the South Pacific.
