Located in Bridgetown, a timber, mining and farming community around 270km south of Perth, the Ashbil Community Garden commemorates the late Stuart Ashbil, a local teacher and sustainability advocate.
The garden was created in two distinct stages. The first comprises 1500m2 of raised vegie beds, fruit trees, a gazebo, playground and Zen garden. There’s also a composting toilet, a potting shed, a former railway gang shed converted into a kitchen, a tool shed and storage rooms and, behind them, a 23,000L water tank.
Stage Two is another 1000m2 containing a chook house constructed by day-release prisoners from Bunbury, a 10-bay composting area, a bush tucker garden and orange and olive groves.
