idely regarded as “the mother of interior design,” Candace Wheeler (1827–1923) was a woman of the Victorian Age who fashioned for herself a life that merits re-examination a full 100 years after her death. in 1903; among the photographs included in the book is the image at left of Wheeler’s sitting room. published in 2001, memorializes the significance of that year’s Wheeler exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art—and her many contributions to the evolution of interior and textile design, as well as to a more comprehensive perspective on women’s creative work as a means of securing their financial independence.
