MAINLANDER
t Mainlander, Danish Modern meets Suburban Kitsch. The place takes its name from a long-departed tiki palace in Clayton that had more umbrellas than a London November. The new Mainlander's open only for dinner, guests pre-pay, and there's no tipping. The menu rotates seasonally. Influences range from Taiwanese to French to traditional Midwestern recipes, and there's a certain playful nostalgia in the whole enterprise (see p. 40). Think baked Alaska, rumaki, and (seriously) lobster.
