THROUGH the introduction of cheap Indian indentured labour to the British colony of Natal, the colonial administration discovered a source of skilled domestic and manual labour in what they called “special servants”.
By the early 1900s, Natal’s growing demands of hospitals, dockyards, municipal councils, hotels, restaurants and housewives all came to rely on special servants to fulfil a range of servant-minded roles.
Many of the special
