HERITAGE can be defined as something that is handed down from the past, as a tradition. Within the canary fancy this could be relevant to every breed. With the Yorkshire canary we have one of the oldest breeds of canaries, with the Yorkshire Canary Club now close to its 130th anniversary and the Southern Yorkshire Canary Club its 120th.
The Yorkshire was originally created by breeders in and around the Bradford area. It proved to be immensely popular, so much so that within a few years of its creation it was said that you could find a breeder in every street in Bradford.
The breeddedicated society officers who have ensured that it flourished throughout the United Kingdom. As the Yorkshire ventured into Europe and other parts of the world, its popularity increased. Eventually we started to see a gradual decline in the UK, while it continued to expand in Turkey and elsewhere.
