Visit the home of Welsh kings

Caernarfon Castle, Gwynedd Kick off your touring year at one of the UK's most historic landmarks

Edward of Caernarfon, the future Edward II of England, was the first Prince of Wales, but that's not this magnificent castle's only claim to fame.

Caernarfon already possessed mythic associations for the Welsh, as the site of what must have been, on that remote frontier, an impressive Roman fort.

The castle was attacked and burned during an uprising of 1294, but Edward put down the rebellion with devastating efficiency and rebuilt the fortifications.

He intended Caernarfon to be both the capital of his new dominion and a royal palace (hence the size), although his successors rarely used it as he planned.

Visit during January – when the castle is open from 10am-4pm (closed 1 January) –
