PHOTOGRAPHING FESTIVE STEAM AT ITS BEST

FESTIVE LINESIDE FUN

As the shadows lengthen and the days grow short, the year approaches its end. We naturally start to take stock at how well the year has gone with all the busy steam action, including splendid galas, many of which have attracted bumper attendances in 2023.

However, the year is not over yet, and in many ways the best is still to come as heritage railways are busy displaying their Christmas trees and lights for festive fun.

Now is a crucial time for heritage lines to make money before the quieter months, with many trains full of excited children (and adults). Being a lineside photographer, it is also a time when I get excited too. With many trains in operation as the colder weather arrives, there can be some spectacular photographic opportunities.

We all have different reasons for why we take pictures of trains. For some, it might be a record of a great day out, and for others, it might be for more creative reasons, to capture the drama and atmosphere that steam creates.
