Newcastle spotter

I was interested in David Cunliffe's letter about his spotting days in Newcastle (SW 440) because, although I lived in Leeds and did most of my spotting there, I made numerous visits to Newcastle Central in the 1950s and early 1960s when staying with relatives in the city but I don't recall seeing anything particularly unusual.

I think 60700 and 60113 would have been quite rare cops in Newcastle because 60700 was allocated to Doncaster and 60113 to New England and King's Cross in the early 1950s so would have spent most of their time in the southern section of the ECML -I remember being sick of the sight of No. 60113 in Leeds!

I was highly intrigued by David's reference to seeing the two streamlined ‘B17s’. in Newcastle as, of course, they were allocated to the former Great Eastern section and wouldn't normally go anywhere near Newcastle. I wondered if theyany light on this?

Railrover Remembered
It was the beginning of that momentous decade, the 1960s. I had never ventured into North Eastern Region territory but seven years of spotting at the southern end of the East Coast Main Line meant that I’d seen many of that region’s larger locomotive
