The Way It Was

“HEAVEN NEEDED A Champion”.

That was the title of the song famously performed by young country music prodigy Jill Floyd to open the 1st Annual David Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions at Texas Stadium on that sunny Sunday afternoon of May 6, 1984. It was a reference to David, who had shockingly passed away at age 25, less than three months prior while on a tour of Japan.

The official cause of death was acute gastric enteritis—a rupture of the intestines—although several other credible sources have floated other possibilities over the years, including painkiller overdose or heart attack related to bulimia., which was scheduled to hit theaters just before Christmas.
